AbstractGPRS is designed for transmitting packet data and supposed to take its radio resource from the pool of channels unused by GSM voice services. The number of channels allocated to GPRS is a random variable depending on the voice traffic. In this paper, an approximation method is used for evaluating the GPRS performance of single-slot service in the variable radio resource. The method could be used for evaluating the GPRS performance when the average service time of circuit switched services is much longer than that of GPRS. The multi-slot services cause higher blocking probability and longer delay to the network than the single-slot service. However, those effects can be reduced by implementing a GPRS resource allocation scheme with flexible multi-slot services.

Adaptive Radio Resource Management for GSM/GPRS Networks
Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in demand for mobile communication services and with the introduction of 2.5G services such as GPRS, this trend is expected to increase further. The highly dynamic and bursty nature of packet switched services such as GPRS will require a much more flexible method of radio resource management so as to maximise system resources compared to currently empl...
متن کاملGSM Phase 2+ General Packet Radio Service GPRS: Architecture, Protocols, and Air Interface
The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a new bearer service for GSM that greatly improves and simplifies wireless access to packet data networks, e.g., to the Internet. It applies a packet radio principle to transfer user data packets in an efficient way between mobile stations and external packet data networks. This tutorial gives an introduction to GPRS. The article discusses the system a...
متن کاملThroughput and buffer analysis for GSM General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)
The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) Phase 2+ standard specifies a new type of packet data service called General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). GPRS allows the dynamic allocation of bandwidth resources. Wireless channels are allocated to a mobile terminal based on its traffic demands. Thus results in better resource utilization compared to the circuit-based data services. In general...
متن کاملA SIM-based electronic transaction authentication system
This paper presents a SIM-based tool for user authentication in various service areas such as financial transactions in e-commerce. Other remote services can use SIM as an authentication tool over existing GSM technology through GPRS, which is an additional packet data feature for the GSM network. GPRS enables packet-switched traffic to exist in predominantly circuit-switched GSM infrastructure...
متن کاملResource Allocation Algorithms for GPRS Network Performance Improvement During Congested Periods
The evolution of European mobile communication systems towards the third generation (3G) is based on GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) [1]. A first step in the evolution is the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) [2], [3], which truly supports packet switched data services. Our goal is to investigate the efficiency of different algorithms used for resource allocation in data transfe...
